Care Instructions

FYI:

Foods that cannot be cleaned off the braces may lead to discoloration and decay. Even though our braces and wires are metal, they are fragile and can easily be damaged by eating the wrong foods. If you break your brackets and wires= it can result in a longer treatment time, as well as additional cost.

FOODS TO ABSOLUTELY AVOID:

Gum (sugarless or otherwise) Sticky Foods - caramels, Starbursts, Tootsie Rolls, toffee, etc. Hard Foods - nuts, popcorn, hard candy, jerky, hard pretzels, frozen treats, etc.

*** Apples, Carrots and Corn on the cob - Make sure that they are cut up into small pieces!!

MINIMIZE SUGAR INTAKE:

Eat less candy, cookies, cake, ice cream and food with a lot of sugar. Drink less, soda pop, fruit drinks and other sugary drinks.

AVOID CHEWING ON PENS, PENCILS, AND FINGERNAILS!

PROBLEM SOLVING:

Loose bracket: If a bracket comes off of the tooth and is still attached to the wire, simply take a pair of tweezers or a pin and take off the colored tie that is holding it to the wire. The bracket should then fall right off the wire. Call the office to make sure that there is enough time allotted at your next appointment to re-bond the bracket.
Loose band: If in discomfort, try wax and call the office.

Loose/poking wire: Try to place the wire back in place with a pair of tweezers. If that is not possible, clip the wire with a pair of fingernail clippers behind the last tooth to which it is securely fastened. If you are experiencing discomfort, place wax on it and call the office.

Lost tie: Simply let the assistant know at your next appointment.
Soreness: Use a warm salt water rinse and/or Tylenol or Ibuprofen per bottle directions.
IF YOU FEEL YOU ARE UNABLE TO HANDLE A PROBLEM ON YOUR OWN, PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE AND WE WILL BE HAPPY TO ASSIT YOU.
GOOD LUCK!
